Education funding another Redford broken promise

EDMONTON, AB (November 23, 2011): Premier Alison Redford has broken yet another promise – this time to restore $107 million in much-needed education funding by finding savings in this year’s budget.

In response to questions from Wildrose MLAs Paul Hinman and Rob Anderson in question period today and during budget debates late night, neither Finance Minister Ron Liepert, Treasury Board President Doug Horner, nor Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk could report where they will find the money in the 2011 budget, as promised by Redford after winning the Tory leadership race.

“The Premier was very clear after her victory that because Alberta has such an enormous deficit this year, she would find the restored education funding by cutting costs in less priority areas,” Anderson said. “She has broken her promise yet again and is instead raiding our children’s savings fund to pay for her promise.”

Last month, the Wildrose suggested Redford find the money by eliminating $970,000 in cabinet pay raises, cutting the $2 billion carbon capture and storage grants, delaying the Royal Alberta Museum ($340 million) and scrapping new MLA offices ($275 million).
