| Lab closure won't affect patients: Where's the proof? |

EDMONTON, AB (November 22, 2011): Wildrose Health Critic Heather Forsyth is calling on the Redford government to produce written proof that the Nov. 30 closure of the cancer lab at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre will not impact cancer testing or outcomes for cancer patients. Yesterday, the lab’s former director, Dr. Tony Magliocco, said the Superboard’s planned closure of the world class Tom Baker cancer lab could have severe consequences for Alberta cancer patients and urged the government to stop the closure. Today, Health Minister Fred Horne attempted to refute Dr. Magliocco’s concerns but couldn’t back it up with any documentary evidence or written plan. Dr. Magliocco is a world-renowned pathologist who helped develop the very tests the Superboard is now shutting down, Forsyth said. His claims must be investigated before the closure happens, she added. “Quite frankly, I don’t believe Minister Horne,” Forsyth said. “His assurances ring hollow if he can’t produce any evidence to back them up. The cancer lab is closing in eight days. Albertans must be assured that cancer patients won’t be affected by this Superboard decision.” Wildrose stands for free enterprise, less government, increased personal freedom and democracy. |
