EDMONTON, AB (October 24, 2011): Premier Alison Redford’s intrusion last week in the Heartland Transmission line decision has compromised a process already riddled with political interference, the Wildrose Caucus said today.
The Alberta Utilities Commission decision on the fate of the Heartland project was suspended by Energy Minister Ted Morton last Wednesday, but on Friday Redford – who has repeatedly stated her support for Heartland – stepped in and ordered it to proceed.
In question period today, Wildrose Energy Critic Paul Hinman accused Redford of tainting the Heartland decision-making process by publicly endorsing it first as a leadership candidate and then as Premier. He asked her to apologize.
“Ms. Redford’s continued support for Heartland, and the use of her office to communicate it, has cast a dark cloud over the entire review and approval process,” Hinman said. “The fact is we have never had a proper, independent needs assessment for these lines and the Premier is continually distorting the issue by saying they are needed. Who is she to make that call?”
The Heartland Transmission line is one of several transmission projects approved under Bill 50 – the Electric Statues Amendment Act.
These lines will drive up power bills for Alberta families, force industry and jobs out of the province, and trample on landowners’ rights.
“This is an abuse of power and Ms. Redford knows better,” Hinman said. “Someone with her legal background and experience promoting democracy abroad should have a higher regard for independent bodies that make decisions like these.”
The Wildrose Caucus stands for free enterprise, less government, increased personal freedom and democracy.
