| HERITAGE FUND HIT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR SAVING STRATEGY |

EDMONTON, AB (September 30, 2011): The Wildrose Caucus today denounced the current government’s mismanagement of Alberta’s Heritage Fund after Finance Minister Lloyd Snelgrove announced that the fund is to once again decline in value.
“This government has spent the last 20 years mortgaging our future by neglecting our savings and spending every last cent of interest on things like personal pay raises, new MLA offices, and wasteful carbon storage programs,” Wildrose Finance Critic Rob Anderson said.
The Heritage Savings Fund was established by Premier Peter Lougheed in 1976 to ensure that future generations would be able to prosper without relying on oil and gas revenues. After inflation, the fund is worth less today than when it was first established.
“It is the height of moral failure for this government to justify its spending problems by spending away our children’s future. After 40 years of incompetence and excuses, Albertans are ready for a government that takes securing their future prosperity seriously.”
In July the Wildrose Caucus released its Competitiveness policy promising to aggressively grow the Heritage Fund through yearly contributions so interest earned annually in the fund eventually surpasses government revenues from oil and gas.
