| Critics Fall Short on Keystone |

CALGARY, AB (September 22, 2011): The Wildrose Caucus today reasserted its support for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, repudiating the position taken by its critics that the pipeline somehow poses a danger to the Alberta economy.
“There is a false choice being put forward by Keystone critics that we have to either choose the pipeline or choose local upgrading jobs, and that by choosing one you’re eliminating the other. That’s simply not the case,” Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said. “The single biggest job creation challenge we face in Alberta is getting our energy product to market. With that in mind, Keystone must proceed.”
Smith also points out that a significant amount of bitumen upgrading is already being done in Alberta. Denying Keystone and forcing even further upgrading will only exacerbate the looming labour shortage, Smith added.
“Of course we want to see as much bitumen upgrading done in Alberta as is viable, but the economic reality is jobs will come with or without it. We still need to get the stuff out the door,” Smith said. “By opposing Keystone in the name of saving jobs, its critics are defeating their own cause.”
Smith also agreed with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who called Keystone a “complete no-brainer.”
“The overwhelming truth is Alberta’s energy products are the safest, most reliable and most ethical in the world. For the United States, by far our most significant trading partner, the choice should be clear,” Smith said.
Wildrose Energy Critic Paul Hinman agreed, saying Keystone would bring economic benefits on both sides of the border.
“The United States needs jobs and growth, and Keystone would certainly make that happen,” Hinman said. “The economic benefits, combined with the superiority of our product in terms of security and reliability, should make Keystone a slam dunk for the US. They need energy, where do they want to purchase and secure it - a pipeline from Alberta or tankers from the Middle East?
The Wildrose Caucus stands for free enterprise, less government, increased personal freedom and democracy.
