Election Info

When is the Election?

Although the exact date is still not known, by law election day must be set on a date between March 1, 2012 and May 31, 2012. We will post this date as soon as we know.

Where do I vote?

Once the election is called, the local Returning Officer (RO) for the constituency of Airdrie will determine the various voting locations and who must vote where. This information will be made available on the Elections Alberta website once the election is called http://www.elections.ab.ca/

In which Constituency do I live?

To find out if you live in the new constituency of Airdrie, please study the following map by clicking here. Elections Alberta will provide an easy online tool to help you find out where you need to vote once the election is called. We will provide it on this page as soon as we get it.

*note: all residents living in the City of Airdrie boundaries are a part of the new Airdrie constituency.

Who is Eligible to Vote?

In order to be eligible to vote in an Alberta provincial election, a person must reside in the polling subdivision in which they seek to vote, and must:

  • be a Canadian citizen,
  • be at least eighteen years of age,
  • be ordinarily resident in Alberta for six months prior to Polling Day

Where can I Register to Vote?

The easiest way to register is on the Elections Alberta website at https://www.voterlink.ab.ca/

You may already be registered to vote and can find out by reregistering on the Elections Alberta website at https://www.voterlink.ab.ca/

You may also register at the polling station on election day with the proper identification (see below); however, this will increase the time spent at the polling station waiting in line. We suggest you try to register online with Elections Alberta in advance of election day.

What Identification to I need to Vote?

An elector whose name is already on the List of Electors is not required to produce identification prior to voting.

If you are not on the List of Electors, you may vote only after producing government issued identification containing the elector’s photograph, current address and name. This includes an Operator’s (Driver’s) License or an Alberta Identification Card.

If you do not have one of the above 2 government issued identifications you must produce two pieces of identification from the following list prior to voting. Both pieces of identification must establish the elector’s name. One piece must establish the elector’s current address.

These pieces of acceptable identification include a Passport, SIN card, Citizenship Card, Credit or Debit card, Alberta Health Insurance card, Student ID, Birth Certificate, Canadian Forces ID, utility bills, credit card or bank statement, personal cheques, property or income tax notices, proof of insurance policies, statement of pension benefits.

Other forms of ID that can be used are listed on the Elections Alberta website at http://www.elections.ab.ca/Public%20Website/faq.htm

What if I can’t make it on Election day?

The first option is to vote at the Advance Poll in your own electoral division. Advance Polls are held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday prior to Election Day. Addresses of Advance Poll locations are published in local newspapers and can also be obtained from Returning Officers or Elections Alberta's website at http://www.elections.ab.ca/.

The second option is to vote by Special (Absentee) Ballot for which details will be made public after the election is called

Please be certain to consider these options well in advance of Polling Day - electors who have not made arrangements in time have been very disappointed when, for example, sufficient time is not left to receive and return a Special Ballot. The Returning Officer will do his or her best to accommodate your particular situation, but the request must be made by the elector in time to meet the administrative requirements of the electoral process.
